Experience the City of Brotherly Love from the vegan perspective

Deeply embedded in the birth of the United States, Philadelphia is widely known for its role in hosting the First and Second Continental Congresses, in which members of the thirteen colonies laid the groundwork for the Revolutionary War and the formation of an independent nation. Philadelphia is home to the Liberty Bell, and the city in which the Declaration of Independence was signed.  Philadelphia hosted the convention of 1787, during which the US Constitution was ratified. Much of this you may have gleaned (and perhaps already forgotten!) from your elementary school education. What you may not know, though, is that Philadelphia is also generally acknowledged as the birthplace of the American Vegetarian / Vegan movement.  Home to the American Vegan Center, this city abounds with vegan restaurants, bakeries, and history.

Trip Overview

On Day 1, Arrival Day, we meet at our hotel where you may leave your luggage before we embark upon an afternoon tour of Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens.  After a brief break during which you may check-in or freshen up, we reconvene for a welcome dinner.

On Day 2, our first full day,  we enjoy a light breakfast at our hotel, after which we head to the American Vegan Center, which has arranged a private tour including pre- and post-tour food tastings (and lunch) and a walking tour highlighting Philadelphia’s reputation as the home to the American vegetarian movement.  In the afternoon, we tour Philadelphia’s murals, affording us the opportunity to view the city at street-level and experience neighborhoods more intimately.  After a short period of free time, we gather for our group dinner.

On Day 3 of our trip, we again have a simple morning meal at our hotel, before attending a private cooking demo hosted by renowned chef Fran Costigan, Queen of Vegan Desserts.  Her cookbooks are composed of decadent creations that fulfill every vegan chocolate-lover’s dreams.  We enjoy a Sunday brunch after the cooking demo, and then join a Constitutional Walking Tour.  Following a brief respite, we reconvene for dinner.

On Day 4, departure day, we enjoy breakfast together prior to checking out of our hotel. Leaving our bags behind, we take one final walking tour, learning of the contributions of women to the history of the city and the United States.
