Experience the City of Brotherly Love from the vegan perspective

Deeply embedded in the birth of the United States, Philadelphia is widely known for its role in hosting the First and Second Continental Congresses, in which members of the thirteen colonies laid the groundwork for the Revolutionary War and the formation of an independent nation. Philadelphia is home to the Liberty Bell, and the city in which the Declaration of Independence was signed.  Philadelphia hosted the convention of 1787, during which the US Constitution was ratified. Much of this you may have gleaned (and perhaps already forgotten!) from your elementary school education. What you may not know, though, is that Philadelphia is also generally acknowledged as the birthplace of the American Vegetarian / Vegan movement. This city abounds with vegan restaurants, bakeries, and history.

Trip Overview

On Day 1, Arrival Day, we meet at our hotel where you may leave your luggage before we embark upon an electric cart tour to experience the best of Philadelphia’s historic landmarks. After a brief break during which you may check-in or freshen up, we reconvene for a welcome dinner.

On Day 2, our first full day, we will dine at an all vegan diner for breakfast, after which we will walk it off on a history tour featuring historical veg figures connected to the city. After lunch, we will tour Philadelphia’s murals, affording us the opportunity to view the city at street-level and experience neighborhoods more intimately. We’ll then visit one of the city’s most highly rated restaurants for dinner.

On Day 3, we’ll breakfast on a bagel and a schmear before attending a private cooking demo hosted by renowned chef Fran Costigan, Queen of Vegan Desserts. Her cookbooks are composed of decadent creations that fulfill every vegan chocolate-lover’s dreams. We enjoy a Sunday brunch after the cooking demo, and then join a walking tour, learning of the contributions of women to the history of the city and the United States. We’ll have dinner at an all vegan pizzeria which also has vegan soft serve!

On Day 4, departure day, we enjoy breakfast together at a cafe prior to checking out of our hotel. Our tour ends after breakfast, but you may feel free to spend some time in this wonderful city on your own before flying home.

Itinerary

On Day 1, plan to arrive at the hotel, centrally located in downtown Philadelphia, by 1pm, at which time we head to lunch and then an electric cart tour through Old City’s historic district, the stunning colonial archictecture of picturesque Elfreth’s Alley, and passing by the Betsy Ross house. You’ll see cultural landmarks, the city’s Parkway Museum District, and have a pause at the iconic Rocky statue and steps, before viewing Philly’s counter-culture boulevard South Street. After a busy day, we’ll have dinner at a fun restaurant very close to our hotel.

On Day 2, we will breakfast at an iconic all vegan diner, followed by a walking tour hosted by the American Vegan Center, where you will learn all about the historical figures connected to the beginnings of vegetarianism in the United States. After lunch we will go on a walking tour to take in some amazing street art. Philadelphia has the most street of any city in the world!
