It is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. We will be based in the town of Windermere. We will be staying on Lake Windermere, England’s largest lake. Quaint villages line the shores, and we will visit them via lake cruises. Literary figures such as William Wordsworth and Beatrix Potter drew inspiration from this area. This covers two nights hotel, train ticket to Edinburgh, sightseeing and activities, and all meals. Note: We will be dining in restaurants for this extended part of the trip, so this part of the tour will not be whole food, plant-based no oil.

Trip Overview

This trip begins by arriving in the beautiful Lake District of England. Accommodations will be provided for the first night, but meals will be on your own on arrival day.

On our first full day, our adventure begins! We will cruise lake Windermere and explore the towns lining the lake. We will visit the places that inspired historical romantic literature and breathtaking illustrations. Next we will see the beauty of the land by seeing Yorkshire Dales National Park, gardens, and of course the lakes that gave this beautiful region its name. We will visit castles, a cave, and the Lake Distirict’s most famous waterfall on this journey to a fairytale land. Our last day we will enjoy breakfast together before we say our good-byes and head home to tell everyone about our amazing trip.

You will never have to worry about what you are going to eat on a Veg Jaunts and Journeys tour. Mark is our in-house chef and founder of letseatgreat.com. He will be preparing all meals, so you can enjoy the adventures and relaxation of your vacation. The meals will be: whole food, no salt/oil/sugar, and always plant-based.

Itinerary


Arrive in the beautiful Lake District of England. Enjoy some time to explore or relax as we get ready to start our adventure. Accommodations will be provided for the night. We will coordinate with you and provide transportation from either Manchester Airport or Windermere train station. If you arrive early, you’ll be able to easily find a vegan lunch in one of Windermere’s restaurants. We will have dinner in the village (pay on your own). Please note we will not be able to check into the houses until 4 pm. No meals included this day, since our chefs need time to set up the kitchen for the week.

On our first full day in the Lake District we will begin with breakfast. You can’t visit the Lake district without cruising the largest lake in England. So, we will be cruising Lake Windermere and enjoying the breathtaking views it has to offer. We will stop at Ambleside, one of the small towns lining the lake, and enjoy a nice picnic. After lunch, we will visit Blackwell, an Arts & Crafts holiday home built at the turn of the 20th century. You will then have some free time to explore on your own. Dinner will be served at the house.

Day three, journey with us back in time as we tour the land that inspired the author of The Tale of Peter Rabbit. The town of Hawkshead has beautiful stone homes and cobblestoned streets. We will be visiting Beatrix Potter’s Hill Top House, and see the beautiful landscapes that inspired her illustrations. We will enjoy a picnic surrounded by the storybook scenery. After lunch, we will complete our journey by visiting  Wray Castle, where Beatrix Potter’s father took their family on vacation when she was only 16. The estate provides miles of lake shore paths, vast lawns, and woodland walks with panoramic views to enjoy.

On day four we will explore Yorkshire Dales National Park. The Yorkshire Dales encompasses thousands of square miles of moors, valleys, hills, and villages. We’ll visit the beautiful grounds of the Bolton Abbey Estate and the ruins of a 12th-century monastery.

On day five, we’ll visit the stunning Holdhird Gardens, 10 acres of herbaceous borders and island beds, spring bulbs, autumn colors, collections of rhododendrons, hydrangeas, alpines, and six National Plant Collections, managed entirely by volunteers of the Lakeland Horticutural Society. After a picnic lunch we’ll see the National Trust property Tarn Hows lake, with its majestic views and peaceful walks in a beautiful countryside.

Travel back to the romantic age as we tour Rydal Mount House and Gardens, the historic family home of William Wordsworth on day six. There are glorious views of Windermere, Rydal Water, and the surrounding fells. The house was a focus for romantic literature and continues to be owned by the Wordsworth family.

Next is a treat for our nature lovers. It’s on to Rydal Caves. Originally an abandoned 19th-century quarry, it’s now been preserved and open to the public. The scenic walk takes you on a stroll through idyllic White Moss woods, alongside Rydal Water, and then into the cave.

We will finish our day by visiting “The most loveliest spot that man hath found” according to William Wordsworth: Grasmere Village and its lake.

On day seven, we’ll hop aboard an Ullswater steamer, and cruise to Lowther Castle and Aira Force Waterfall. Lowther Castle is the enormous ruins of a medieval castle, and is surrounded by woodlands and historic English gardens.

After lunch we’ll get back onboard the steamer and escape the ordinary. We will take a one hour loop walk to see the Lake District’s most famous waterfall, Aira Force. At the base of the falls lies an arboretum, with conifers from all over the world. Dinner will be back at the house.

Day eight, we will have breakfast and this will conclude our English adventure!
