About your guide

Trip Overview

Our tour starts with transportation from Madrid airport to our hotel. If you arrive early and your room is not ready you will be able to store your bags. The hotel is in the heart of Madrid, just a short walk from historic landmarks and modern spaces dedicated to culture, fashion, and gastronomy. Malasaña, the neighborhood we will be staying in, is known for being a place where the old ways and new ways have fused to create a ground-breaking artistic and strongly vegan community.

On our first full day, we’ll take a walking tour of Madrid led by a local guide who will show us key points of interest as well as hidden treasures that the city offers. On Day three we will be introduced to the growing vegan culture of Madrid with a tour that ends in tapas tasting, and the Andalusian beats that form the expressive style of flamenco by attending a performance at a world famous school and theater specializing in the style.

Day 4 we will board a quick train to Toledo for a full-day tour that provides one of the only vegan experiences available to visitors of this ancient city. On Day 5 we will again board a train, this time saying “hasta la proxima” to Madrid and “muchos gustos” to Barcelona. Here too, our hotel will place us central to main attractions within this metropolis on the Mediterranean.

Day 6, our first full day in Barcelona, we will be shown the sights during a walking tour of the Gothic Quarter and the famed Sagrada Familia. On Day 7 we will dive even deeper into the world of Catalan Modernism while enjoying panoramic views of Barcelona by touring Gaudí’s Park Güell.

On Day 8 we will travel by train to picturesque Girona to experience a well-preserved peek into the region’s past. Our final day will end after breakfast.

Many days include some free time around planned activities for our guests to explore on their own or with the friends they have made on the tour.

Itinerary

Our Spanish adventure begins with shared transportation from the Madrid airport to the hotel. Check-in begins at 2 pm, but if you arrive earlier, feel free to store your bags at the hotel and go for a wander. Perhaps check out the famous Gan Via just two blocks away, known as the “SOHO of Madrid”, and grab lunch at one of the many vegan restaurants nearby. Then, we’ll officially begin our tour with a welcome dinner so we can all get acquainted.

Our first full day in Madrid will start with breakfast and then a walking tour of the famous historic quarter in which our local guide will show us both the must-see sights and the gems overlooked by most tourists. We will have lunch after the tour and then have free time in the afternoon to continue exploring the city or catching up on some rest before our group dinner that night.

Meals Included
Day 1: Dinner
Day 2: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner

On Days 3 & 4 in Madrid we will be working with a tour agency that specializes in ethical vegan tourism. They will be helping provide us with opportunities that many of us struggle to find while traveling internationally, namely eco-friendly tourism that caters to vegans.

On our third day we will have breakfast and then start our tour of Malasaña where we will learn about the history of the area and visit some of the renowned vegan shops that have popped up in this eclectic neighborhood. This tour will end with a tapas tasting which will act as our lunch for the day. We will again have some free time in the afternoon for individual or group activities before regrouping for dinner. Since Madrid is considered the world capital of flamenco, we will enjoy a thrilling show at the first flamenco theater in the world, Teatro Flamenco Madrid

On Day 4 we will be headed to Toledo for a full day tour of this UNESCO World Heritage Site. After a quick breakfast, we will get on a train to Toledo and be led on a private tour through this “city of three cultures”. On this walking tour we will see medieval monuments to the Jewish, Muslim, and Christian cultures that defined the history of the city. Since there is a lack of vegan options in Toledo this tour has been specially crafted to include a vegan lunch that will provide an authentic taste of the flavors of the region. After our tour we will take the train back to Madrid and have dinner as a group.

Meals Included
Day 3: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner
Day 4: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner

Day 5 will be an early start with a quick breakfast to go before a train to our next stop, Barcelona. After we have arrived and checked into our hotel we will take a vegan tapas tour for lunch and enjoy the flavors of Catalan gastronomy. In the afternoon there will be some free time to explore the city as you please, and then in the evening we will gather for our first group dinner in Barcelona.

On Day 6 we will have breakfast and then go on a private walking tour of Barcelona’s Barrio Botico, or Gothic Quarter, where we will see old Roman architecture and learn about the history of this 2000 year old city. Continuing the tour, we will hop in a taxi and head to see the famed Sagrada Familia – the soon-to-be-completed tallest church of any kind in the world. It stands as a work of artistic and architectural genius, and is considered one of the must-see stops in Barcelona.

After the tour we will have lunch and then some free time to explore Barcelona. You could use this time to check out Barceloneta, the lively beach area with remnant charm of the historic fishing village it was, or you could walk La Rambla, Barcelona’s most famous street. We will regroup for dinner and share in the pleasure of good food and great company once again.

Meals Included
Day 5: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner
Day 6: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner

We will start Day 7 off with breakfast and then we will take a private tour of Atoni Gaudí’s Park Güell and the nearby Gràcia neighborhood with a local tour guide. Park Güell is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and fascinating public park system that merges art, imagination, architecture, and landscaping into one. Afterwards we will grab some lunch and have our last bit of free time in Barcelona before a group dinner.

On Day 8, our last full day in Spain, we will take a train to Girona where we will grab lunch and then take a walking tour of the city led by a local guide. This tour will walk us along the emblematic medieval walls, the popular Plaça Independència, the Romanesque Arab Baths, the beautiful cobblestone streets of the medieval Jewish Quarter, and more. At the end of the day we will take a train back to Barcelona where we will have our last group dinner of the trip.

On Day 9 our tour will end after breakfast.
