9 Nights in Sustainable and Eco-Friendly Germany

Walk, Eat, and Explore on this Vegan Tour of Two Very Different German Cities!

What can I say about Berlin? It is the European city that I have visited the most, and where I feel most at home. It was the destination of our very first tour in 2017, and our last tour before the pandemic in December 2019. We are long overdue for a return!

Berlin is not a pretty city, having been almost completely decimated during World War II, but you can find pockets of preserved lovely residential buildings, and some fantastic modern architecture. It’s a massively spread out city, with a terrific and extensive public transit system, making it super easy to get around and hit up vegan spots. We don’t normally include many museums on our tours, but you can’t grasp the history of this city without visiting some, and they’re all fascinating. In between walking tours and museums we’ll dine at 100% vegan restaurants; there are so many we will only be able to visit a fraction. We’ll also experience an all-vegan grocery store and some vegan clothing and shoe stores.

Our visit to Berlin will be complemented by lovely and elegant Hamburg, Germany’s second largest city. It also boasts an exploding vegan scene. On a day trip we’ll visit historic Luebeck.

Trip Overview

You will be met at Berlin’s sparkling new airport and drive to our hotel, in the center of the former East Berlin, where everything fun happens. Our welcome dinner will be at one of the city’s numerous 100% vegan Vietnamese restaurants.

Our first full day will take us on a walking tour in the morning, followed by a driving tour in an historic Trabi car, the symbol of East Germany’s automotive industry. On Day 3, we’ll start with a somber visit to the Holocaust Memorial, then to the nearby Reichstag. Later in the day, we’ll experience an amazing vegan food and sustainability tour.

Day 4 will take us to some of the city’s most important museums, and the next day will be yours to explore as you wish.

On Day 6 we’ll take the train to Hamburg, and then next day we’ll have a walking tour and see the world’s largest model train display.

Day 8 will take us to an emigration museum, and for a lovely cruise on Hamburg’s lakes and canals. We’ll hop on a train to picturesque and medieval Luebeck the next day, then have our farewell dinner in Hamburg. Our tour will end after breakfast the next day.

Itinerary

You may arrive at Berlin airport any time during the day, and will be met by a driver. Our first event will be a welcome dinner at one of Berlin’s amazing Vietnamese vegan restaurants. Who would have thought Vietnamese cuisine, no less 100% vegan, would be prevalent throughout the city? The meals look like artistry on a plate.

On our first full day, we will have a half day walking tour to get a glimpse of the city’s most important sites and events. Berlin is incredibly saturated with turbulent moments. With historical images, videos, and maps, our guide will reveal the stories of the most famous of them. We will learn how architecture, art, and politics are all woven into the cityscape. You will gain deeper insights into the city’s multilayered history and learn what lies beyond the facades and beneath its stones.

After lunch we’re joining a Trabi Safari! You will get to drive a vintage East German car through the streets of Berlin. Don’t worry–you’ll be in a line of cars following a lead car with a guide. Before dinner we will visit a little 100% vegan food store with some interesting finds.

Meals Included
Day 1: Dinner
Day 2: Breakfast, lunch and dinner

The next morning we will pay a visit to the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe. Walking through the maze of concrete slabs is a somber and disorienting experience. We’ll then make a short walk to the Reichstag and have access to the view from the top of its incredible dome.

In the afternoon we’ll discover the world’s vegan capital and explore just how big the vegan and sustainability movement has become in this vibrant city by joining a vegan food tour. Throughout the tour we will munch on delicious food while listening to stories about the vegan community in Berlin. Among other great things unique to Berlin, we will visit the first all vegan shopping complex with a vegan supermarket, vegan fashion, vegan sushi, and more. You will experience a multicultural vibe while you learn and discover different aspects of the sustainable vegan movement in Berlin. You will experience the local’s favorite places right in the vegan hear of the city.

The next day will be a day of museums. First up will be the Berlin Wall Memorial Museum, a unique indoor-outdoor attraction that you can discover at your own pace. After lunch we will see the Palace of Tears, a former rail station and border crossing between East and West Berlin during the Cold War. Then it’s on to the DDR Museum, where exhibits portray many aspects of life during Communisim. Dinner will be at a fabulous zero-waste restaurant.

Meals Included
Day 3: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner
Day 4: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner

Day 5 will be a free day. There is so much to explore in this city, whether art or history museums, markets, parks, or boat rides on the River Spree. We’ll provide you with some ideas. Late in the day we’ll gather for our last dinner in Berlin.

The next day, after an early lunch, we’ll board a train to Hamburg, about two hours away, and you’ll get to see Berlin’s incredibly modern main train station. After checking in to our hotel, we’ll enjoy dinner in Hamburg.

Meals Included
Day 5: Breakfast, and dinner
Day 6: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner

We’ll have a three hour walk to get to know Hamburg’s glorious history and present day and hear some of the most fascinating stories that have happened in the city. You will explore over 1000 years of Hamburg’s history and see all the iconic sights including Hamburg’s impressive town hall and parliament, St Petri church, Europe’s first financial district with some of the most breathtaking and beautiful Art Nouveau architecture, and the historic Speicherstadt, a warehouse district turned UNESCO World Heritage Site, adjacent to the city’s new harbor with its incredibly modern philharmonic building.

In the afternoon we’ll have fun visiting Miniatur Wunderland, the largest model train display in the world. It is a jaw dropping wonder! Then we’ll enjoy another dinner in this vegan-friendly city.

The next day, as our tour begins winding down, will have a slower pace. We’ll visit BallinStadt museum. Hamburg was the Gateway to the World in the 19th and 20th centuries for about five million European emigrants. The port of Hamburg was the starting point for the New World in the hopes of a better life. This museum is dedicated to those emigrants and their stories.

After lunch we will cruise on Hamburg’s lake and canals. Would you believe Hamburg has more bridges inside its city limits than any other city in the world and more canals than Amsterdam and Venice combined? It’s lovely experiencing architecture from the water. You’ll then have a bit of free time before our group dinner.

Meals Included
Day 7: Breakfast, lunch and dinner
Day 8: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner

On our last full day we’ll board a train for a one hour  jaunt to Luebeck, an historic Hanseatic city. Upon arrival we’ll have lunch, and then a walking tour to see the salt warehouses, merchant houses, romantic alleyways and courtyards, the central market, and historic town hall. Luebeck is home to Niederegger, the famous marzipan maker. Luckily for us, marzipan is accidentally vegan!

Our last dinner of the tour will be back in Hamburg.
